All big cities have zoos. Their main purpose is good. It’s aimed at saving wild animals population, their breeding. Also visiting a zoo gives people an opportunity to show all the different spices of animals. Thus, people learn animals’ habits and features. However, in practice people visit the zoo more likely for entertainment. This is just for fun, kind of a leisure.
But a lot of people confused by the zoo and feel a sense of pity and compassion for these living beings who don’t live in their usual natural habitat. Animals in the zoo are kept sometimes in unsatisfactory conditions. Let be honest, they live in captivity, people lock them up in cages. I always wonder, is the ruined life of animals worth it for people’s fun?

Also, that today there is a country in the center of Europe with not only zoos – it’s Belarus. There are a large number of innocent people, staying behind bars. These people are kept in prison, just like animals in the zoo, which do not have the ability to resist those who put them there. Belarusian people are in prison only because they have their own opinion, as well as the courage and enough inner freedom to express it. They, like animals, are defenceless and helpless against physical force and power, which isolates them. State power deprives people of the right to live freely according to their choice. The worst thing is that situation has already become some kind of the norm in Belarus, just like zoos.
We created our project in order to show this comparison. Since people go to the zoo to watch how the animals are in cages or aviaries, we suggest to get to know how Belarusians are in places of imprisonment. Our heroes have real prototypes of people, avatars of animals, different superpowers and terms of imprisonment. Each hero has its own red mark, so that you can recognize and remember it. Also we want to emphasize, that all our pets have female gender. This is also scary and not accidental. A woman is the life-giver, and while she is in captivity, until she is not free, a new life cannot be born!

She organized international cultural projects in Germany and Belarus. She was detained for her civil position and they tried to expel her from the country, but at the border Maria tore her passport. She has been in custody since September 2020. Amnesty International recognized Maria as a prisoner last fall conscience, among others, Maria was awarded the Sakharov Prize.

The models of our project were the actresses of BelarusFreeTheatre. The project was worked on by a creative team consisting of a photographer, a stylist, hair stylists, make-up artists, a graphic designer, a copywriter, and translators. Each of us invested in the project not only our professional qualities, but also our soul, our emotions, our feelings, our creative potential. Some of the participants of our project now remain in Belarus, others are in forced emigration. Each of us is currently in difficult life circumstances, like most Belarusians. Therefore, we estimated each photo-unit of the project at 400 pln.
